Selecting the Dressage Horse

A complete description of the ideal dressage horse, covering all aspects of sports horse conformation, movement, and temperament from the viewpoints of both the rider and the breeder.

Dressage in Lightness

As an encore to her popular The Classical Rider, Sylvia Loch has written a book that focuses attention on an equal relationship between horse and rider, exploring riding from both the rider's and the horse's points of view with 150 color photos, 50 color artworks.

The Beginning Dressage Book

The Beginning Dressage Book grew out of the real-life experience of Kathryn Denby-Wrightson, a professional trainer, teacher and judge, and Joan Fry, a backyard horse owner who sought to make riding a more rewarding experience for herself and her mount. That's what dressage is all about. It's a method of training that develops the horse's natural abilities--the way it moves and balances itself--so that it will seat his rider comfortably at any gait and is easily controlled under any circumstances.

Anyone who can ride can ride dressage, and any type of horse will benefit from dressage. With the help of this practical, down-to-earth handbook you will be able to develop your own riding skills and reeducate your horse into a smooth, relaxed, responsive horse who is a joy to ride. And you can do it easily and inexpensively in your own backyard.

The Dressage Rider's Survival Guide

This is a very funny book. From the Foreword entitled A Guide to Apportioning Blame throughout such insightful topics as the use of aids, equipment, history, costs of the sport and physical fitness required (none of which are presented in a manner that would be recognized by readers of any other book on dressage), the reader is in for a laugh-out-loud treat.

Margaret Odgers has been there and what makes her material so screamingly funny is the core of Absolute Truth that runs through the book. Eva Sandor's charming cartoons alone are worth the purchase price.

Margaret Odgers is a working wife and mom with three kids, three horses, on a tight budget with a sincere and somewhat pathetic (she says) desire to become a good dressage rider.

Dressage

Recommended reading for the United States Dressage Federation's Instructor Certification Program.

In Germany, this great book has gone through four very successful editions and it's now available in English! Aimed at intermediate and advanced riders, this book offers no shortcuts, but instead a systematic approach built on tried and true principles of training handed down through the ages. There are definitely no shortcuts offered here, but a systematic approach built on tried and true principles of training handed down through the ages.

The author leads the reader progressively to the higher levels in a logical and often witty approach. Excellent line drawings clarify and enhance the text, making this one of the most readable books on dressage available.

Anatomy of Dressage

Originally published in German and previously published in English as the Anatomy of Riding, this new translation of the classic work provides riders with the anatomical basis for correct riding.

Working from this anatomical perspective, the authors, who in addition to being father and son are both medical doctors, discuss the individual requirements of riding theory. Many of their conclusions may seem surprising to some readers, such as the notion that it is physically impossible to "brace the lower back" as we are so often advised by instructors.

A fascinating work, not to be missed by serious riders.

Dressage Principles Illuminated

In this lovely, thought-provoking work on the art of dressage, readers will recognize author Charles de Kunffy's uncompromising devotion to the horse.

He insists that riding must have therapeutic value for the horse as well as the rider, and that a seamless partnership between the two be the most important goal (rather than accolades in competition). He explains the rationale for training the horse and the methodology for doing so correctly, placing great emphasis on the importance of suppleness and collection, which lead to athletic development. Mr. de Kunffy also writes eloquently about what it means to be an equestrian and about the roles of teachers and mentors in a rider's education.

Charles de Kunffy is a sought-after international dressage judge and clinician who zealously passes on his vast knowledge to further generations. His previous books include The Athletic Development of the Horse and Training Strategies for Dressage Riders. Mr. de Kunffy makes his home in the San Francisco Bay Area. BioMechanical Riding and Dressage

Biomechanical riding is about a strategy for riding horses.

It is about approaching riding with a plan for cooperative interaction between you and your horse. The strategy integrates principles or concepts with their execution or technique of riding.

This Atlas is explanatory concerning relations between rider and horse. It is a connecting book about the intersection of principle and technique in several literatures and is not a replacement for your other books.

Training Strategies for the Dressage Rider

Training Strategies for Dressage Riders is a unique guide to the art and technique of dressage, written by one of the most renowned equestrian trainers in the world today. It offers a complete training system for both horse and rider, paying special attention to how a riders actions can influence a mount.

The book provides practical, in-the-saddle advice on a wide range of dressage topics, including:
* The art of classical equitation
* The development of the riders seat and aids
* Developing the basic gaits
* Gymnastic improvement
* Horse insubordination
* Clinics and competitions judging

Whether you want to prepare for dressage competition or simply improve your riding skills, this is a matchless guide. Dressage-once the sport of royalty-combines athletic grace with the fascination of the horse-and-rider relationship at its most highly developed level. It is the art of making horse and rider move gracefully as one.

Charles de Kunffy says in his Foreword to this 2nd edition of his classic training book, "I am relentless in the hope that I can inspire in my readers the ‘right spirit' toward horses and riding; that I can also add to their scholarship and foster their ‘right-mindedness' toward the art of riding and toward their beloved horses.

"Horsemanship is a complex science and, when done well, a great art. As a science, it is a matter for the intellect, acquired by scholarship. When practiced on the level of art, it ennobles the spirit and elevates the character."

Training Strategies for Dressage Riders is full of specific guidelines for the correct development of riders and their horses. It addresses the most important issues involved with improving equitation, so that riders will be able to gymnasticise their dressage horses correctly. Believing in "equestrian elegance through effectiveness," Charles de Kunffy guides riders through the traditional dressage training system, explaining how horse and rider can combine athleticism and science into breathtaking art.

Dancing with Your Horse

I would recommend this book to people who like dancing with their dressage horses. I happen to have an artistic streak in my blood and have won four state ribbons for freestyle horse dancing.

This is a great book for beginners and experts alike.

It starts from the basic steps all the way to double ronde-jambe axel loup.
